What are Botox and Dysport?

These FDA approved medicines are injected to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines
and crow's feet. They work by blocking the nerve impulses to the treated muscles.  This reduces the muscle activity that can cause persistent lines to form between the brows.

If your skin is smooth between your brows when your face is relaxed and the frown lines are only there when you actively frown, the permanent creases can be avoided with regular treatments.  If you already have furrows when your face is relaxed, you may look angry when you are not. Even these persistent lines will gradually get shallower with continued treatment. Similar results can be achieved for crow’s feet as well.

The two brands are very similar. We use both Botox(onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport(abobotulinumtoxinA).  The effects last three to four months and then must be repeated.  They do not fill spaces like fillers, but sometimes fillers are used along with them for a more complete or long lasting result.

Will I look like one of those strange appearing Hollywood actors?

When used conservatively in the appropriate locations, Botox and Dysport do not produce a frozen Hollywood face.

The pictures show what the people look like when they are trying to make the deepest frown they can.  After treatment, you can see them try, but the frown does not appear.  This treatment does not keep you from using other untreated muscles, so your face will not feel or look stiff if selected muscles are treated.

What should I expect?

Side effects can occur. The most common is temporary drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry. These are reversible. More serious side effects are usually associated with non-cosmetic, non-FDA approved medical uses.  See the Botox or Dysport websites for details.

Are there side effects?
